Stress and Your Digestive System....
Why De-Stressing Supports Your Digestive System
In order to understand why de-stressing supports digestive health, it is imperative to understand what happens to digestion under stress.
Put simply, stress has the following impact on digestion:
- Decreased secretions needed for digestion.
- Slower small intestinal transit time.
- Encourages over-growth of gut bacteria.
- Weakens the intestinal barriers, leading to leaky gut syndrome.
- Stress can increase acid in your stomach, causing indigestion.
- The mill in your stomach can shut down and lead to feeling nauseous.
- Stress can impact the colon leading to diarrhea or constipation.
- It can make diseases like stomach ulcers, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease worse.
Occassional stress is normal, but chronic stress is very damaging to health. Gut microbiota respond directly to stress-related signals. Not only does stress affect the physiological function of the gut, but it has also been shown to actually cause changes in the composition of the microbiota. And may beven changes to neurotransmitters. This can lead to the development of a variety of gastrointestinal diseases such as GERD, peptic ulcers, IBD, IBS, and allergies to foods.
Basically it does a lot of bad stuff, and no good stuff for the digestive system. The digestion is controlled by the enteric nervous system. When an individual is stressed, the “fight or flight” response can be activated in the central nervous system, and blood flow to the digestive tract can be slowed which impacts the contraction of the digestive muscles, and decreases the secretion needed for digestion. This can cause inflammation and makes individuals more susceptible to infection.
7 Ways to Combat Stressors:
As you can see, learning how to de-stress can support digestive health, and lead to greater health all around. How can you de-stress? The following are some simple ways to combat both normal stressors and causes of chronic stress.
- Exercise. Physical activity helps to relieve tension and stimulate the release of endorphins. Endorphins relieve stress and improve mood.
- Relaxation. Finding ways to relax can help eliminate normal stresses. For those with chronic stress, relaxation therapies like yoga, meditation, and hypnosis, or mental imaging, biofeedback, and muscle relaxation can be extremely beneficial, especially when practiced regularly.
- Talk it out. Talking to a friend can help to lower stress. Often simply “Getting it off your chest” is what is needed. However, in cases of chronic stress, simply talking to a friend may not be enough. Talking to a trained therapist can be useful in helping to de-stress, as they can help to pinpoint triggers, and offer methods for coping with and avoiding stress. One study of individuals with IBS showed 70 percent saw improvement in their symptoms after 12 weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy.
- Eat foods that are easy to digest. It is normal to eat junk, binge, etc. when stressed. However, overeating or binging on junk food to deal with stress usually ends up leading to more stress and poor digestion. Instead of fatty, sugary foods, consider a healthy, well-balanced diet. Consider dining, rather than eating, meaning slow things down. And focus on foods that help you feel well.
- Limit stressors. Some stress is unavoidable, but look at the things that most commonly cause stress in your life, and look for ways to reduce or eliminate them to make your life more stress free. This might be learning to say “no” or it might mean changing career paths.
- Get enough sleep. Too little sleep can cause stress. Make getting sufficient sleep a real priority. Not only does insufficient sleep lead to loss of brain function, but it can also make it harder for your body to process “normal” stress.
- Do something fun. Stress is often easily relieved simply by doing something enjoyable. Choose a hobby you have not made time for recently, see a movie, read a book, play a game, or do anything you normally find enjoyable.

Today's Topic....Emotional Eating
We all emotional eat for different reason's and feelings we have. I went through a horrific trauma in May of 2013 that forever changed my life....I lost my son, I went through all the typical emotions, blaming, hate, sadness, disgust, wanting to know why, feeling sick, not eating, then over eating for comfort, etc. It was a roller coaster that some people never find their way off of. Well it is possible to get off, its a choice, everything about life is a choice. Reading books didn't help much either...... so I had to decide to take my life back. Or I could just wallow around in sadness forever but that didn't sound like much fun to me and I have 3 other kids that I adore as well as 2 step kids........... So make the choice to make your changes in your life and do it NOW!!!
Biofeedback is great for emotional problems because it is a stress reducing machine. my problem was at first I was so out of it I couldn't even help myself. My problem was I lost my 11 year old son in 2013 and if it were not for this machine....I'm sure I'd be on some sort of antidepressant... It works with the body to peel layers of stress we hold on to..
Enter “emotional eating”.
Simply put, emotional eating can be absolutely catastrophic to any diet plan.
“And things were going SO well….”
Yes, I know the feeling.
Time to put an end to that nonsense once and for all.
When talking about emotional eating, it’s most common to find “stress” right there at the root of the problem. We get stressed, we eat Ben & Jerry’s. It’s human nature.
BUT, it sure isn’t helping us along the path to a better, healthier body. And this is exactly where people go wrong.
Let’s face the facts, we ALL do and will continue to deal with stress on a regular basis. It’s a part of life that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. But it’s how we deal with the stress that can either lead to a fitter, healthier lifestyle, or a fatter, unhappy, unhealthy one.
You see, when dealing with stress, we’ll ultimately either choose a “negative” or a “positive” way to cope with that stress.
And here’s the most important thing to realize in this whole discussion: If you do not ACTIVELY look for, plan for, and choose positive ways to cope with stress, you WILL resultantly, almost naturally, choose negative coping mechanisms (such as stuffing your face with 87 chocolate chip cookies, which by the way I have NEVER done…I cut it off around 63 because I have a little something called discipline. Geez).
But, the good news is that there is a ton of “positive” ways to cope with stress. Here are a few that I really enjoy, and much prefer over accumulating body fat and being even more depressed:
1. Going for a jog, long walk, or drive
I love all three of these activities because it gives me the opportunity to let me mind just zone out and think. In fact, when I go for a run when I’m stressed I find that I don’t really even realize I’m exercising because my mind is distracting me so much from the fact that I’m really “working”. It’s pretty cool when you’ve gone a mile or two without even realizing it’s been that long/far. At the same time, I’m clearing my mind and getting the “feel good” endorphins pumping throughout my cerebellum—great to relieve stress, even better for my body.
And if for whatever reason I just don’t feel up for exercising, I’ll hop in the car and go for a drive. Nothing like cruisin’ (FGL shout out) and thinking a bit to clear my mind and cope with whatever may be currently going on in my life.
2. Jammin’ out to some KILLER music
I absolutely love music. I go to concerts like it’s nobody’s business and just love how music can evoke so many different types of emotional responses.
And you know what’s even better? Combining music with one of the activities from #1 above.
Boo-yah, stress be gone!
Do you want to seriously end emotional and binge eating habits once and for all? Then you HAVE to make a conscious effort to find and choose healthy, positive coping mechanisms.

5 ‘Healthy’ Practices That Slow Down Your Metabolism, We dont want that?? Do we??
5 ‘Healthy’ Practices That Slow Down Your Metabolism, We dont want that?? Do we??
There are many healthy trends out there that can unknowingly cause harm. And a lot of those “healthy” things you’re doing now could also be slowing down your metabolism.
1. You’ve completely cut out carbohydrates
High protein diets have been a trend for a long time lately. And for good reason. Many studies show that a low-carb diet is good for weight management. But for overall health, cutting out carbs can hurt your body, especially if you’re exercising regularly. When you exercise, your muscles demand glycogen from carbohydrates stored in your body. Low glycogen levels will sap your energy and you won’t be able to exercise well. And, you’ll burn fewer calories because your body won’t require as much energy to recover.
I like the Bill Phillips suggestion of having a serving of complex carbohydrates (about the size of your fist) for every meal.
2. You’re bad at snacking
So, while things like nuts are high calorie, your body will respond better than eating low-nutrient dense snacks like rice cakes and crackers.
3. No dairy
This one is going to be controversial. Many of you reading this are probably yelling at the screen saying you should never eat dairy. Ever.
But dairy has a few nutrients that are great for fat burning. It has CLA, calcium and whey. Conjugated Linoleic Acid is a natural fatty acid that is important to the body. CLA has several unique structural and functional properties. It modulates cellular processes, including the maintenance of muscle mass and lipolysis. CLA has also been shown to be effective for maintaining normal cholesterol levels and supporting the immune system. It can help modify body composition by sustaining lean muscle tissue and enhancing lipolysis (the burning of fat), resulting in a number of health and weight benefits. CLA is a patented ingredient for fat reduction.
Calcium may also help the bodies’ natural fat burning process function more efficiently.
“At midlife, women tend to gain one-quarter to one-half a pound per year whether they want it or not, and it all goes to their waist,” says Robert Heaney, MD, an internationally recognized expert in bone biology and calcium nutrition with Creighton University in Nebraska.
“We’ve found that women with the highest dairy intake have an average weight gain of zero, and those with the lowest dairy intake gained a pound per year,” Heaney tells WebMD.
In studies of both mice and men, Michael Zemel, PhD, director of The Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, was one of the first to show that calcium stored in fat cells plays a crucial role in regulating how fat is processed and stored by the body. The more calcium there is in a fat cell, the more fat the cell will burn — and the greater the weight loss, Zemel says
“Calcium provides small increases in thermogenesis, the body’s core temperature,” Zemel explains. “This may boost metabolism, which can prompt our bodies to burn fat.
“If weight loss is your goal, eat three servings of fat-free or low-fat dairy products every day, he advises.
“But cardiologists (heart specialists) may not like this advice: Whole-fat milk works even better in a weight-loss plan, says Heaney. “In fact, whole-fat milk has a satiety value so you naturally won’t eat so much. A high-carbohydrate diet leaves you feeling hungry all the time.”
4. Restricting salt
Salt is bad, says everyone. That statement is usually made because people load up salt with heavily processed foods. Salt (and especially the iodine) may help to:
- Naturally increases your metabolic rate.
- Support stress.
- Encourage healthy levels of oxytocin.
Just be careful of this one that you get the right amount of salt — not too little and not too much.
5. Drinking too much water
Now, hydration is one of the best things you can do for your body.
With that said, you can go overboard with the water bottles. Drinking 8 glasses a day may not be right for you. Listen to your body, and drink when you’re thirsty. How much water you need every day depends on a lot of factors, like:
- Your body weight. Heavier people usually need more water.
- Your diet. Are you already eating a lot of water-based foods?
- Your activity level. Are you sweating every day? Are you moving all day for work? Are you sitting at a desk all day? All those things go into play about how much water you should drink.
- The average temperature. Are you hot or cold wherever you are? You may need more or less water depending on the climate.
- Are you getting enough minerals
Being hydrated is not just about liquid. If you’re craving more taste than just water, you may need something else to help get more sodium, magnesium or potassium or other minerals. Our Solstic options are a great way to fortify your water. Also try the Ionic Minerals one of my favorites.
Conclusion: Your health is not a health trend
Don’t just assume that because there is a health trend out there that it’s right for you. Listen to your body and get balance in your nutrition and balance with what works for you. if you need help contact me I would be happy to help you!
