organic definition for US

The term “organic" has a regulatory definition, at least in the United States and many other countries. But for many consumers and producers, it’s also a way of life. In recent years, more Americans are likely to state they have an interest in natural and organic products. The U.S. organic food industry has grew from $6.1 billion in 2000 to $26.7 billion in 2010.
For those shoppers who opt out of buying organic, price tends to be the reason. But the cost difference between organic and conventional is narrowing.
According to Natural Products Marketplace”
“However ... many consumers are still mixing up natural and organic, suggesting it is possible consumers are buying natural thinking they’re getting the benefits of organic ... 59 percent of respondents erroneously agreed with the statement ‘foods/beverages can be labeled as ‘natural’ so long as they meet a government standard.’”
